Bio:

Leah is a lifelong artist. Leah’s early education comes from classical and traditional drawing and painting methods, passed from artists to artist. Early mentors instilled in her the value of working from life. To this day, she maintains the tradition of painting by natural light and working from life.  After some success in Santa Fe, and early involvement in AWA, Leah relocated to New York where she lives today. A former Board Member, Leah joined American Women Artists in 2005.

Artist's Statement:

I was born in New Mexico, where brilliant color backdrops the unique and rugged landscape; where diverse cultures converge with tradition and art, living up to its name, the “Land of Enchantment.” From the start, I embraced a fascination with the mystical and creative atmosphere of my home state. An elemental way of living in which tall tales, earthy symbols, and metaphors were commonplace helped shape my vision and expression. The enchantment has stayed with me and is a partner in my process as an artist. I work in natural light that transforms even simple objects into jewels that beckon me. This impetus begins a journey that is both mercurial and magical. Recently, my curiosity and love of oil paint has resulted in a 10-piece revelatory and reflective body of work: Destiny & Purpose…(the) Internal Uprising

Winning the Purchase Award has such enormous significance for me, it’s every artist’s dream to be in a museum and my work, Lee’s Ferry Landing, will be at the Tucson Desert Art Museum for as long as I live. I’m so thankful to the American Women Artists for that opportunity.”
